API 578, officially API Recommended Practice 578 (API RP 578), is a standard from the American Petroleum Institute (API) that

provides guidelines for a Material Verification Program (MVP) to confirm the correct chemical composition of alloy materials in new and existing process piping systems within the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries

. Its purpose is to prevent accidents and equipment failures caused by incorrect or mixed-up materials by emphasizing the use of Positive Material Identification (PMI), helping to ensure the safety and integrity of critical assets.

Key aspects of API RP 578:
  • Purpose:

To establish a quality assurance system for material verification to prevent the use of wrong materials, which can lead to accelerated corrosion or component failure.

  • Scope:

It applies to ferrous and nonferrous alloy materials used in new and existing process piping systems and equipment.

Our integrity management group evaluates the probability of a failure on a pipeline system and storage tanks, and the consequences of such a failure, including: risk assessment, integrity assessment, risk mitigation, performance measures, management of change, communications and quality control.

Corrosion Integrity is headquartered in Sacramento, California, USA with an operation in Midwest, and Southwest United States. Please contact us  at [email protected]  or by phone (530) 562-7604 .  For online inquiries, please fill out our contact form and we will get back to you in 24 hours!
